The Brief

SMT were tasked with providing health and safety consultancy and training services at their Lens Manufacturing plant in Ennis, since 2000. The company were looking for an experienced H&S support to implement its H&S programme across various shifts working in the plant, this required a degree of flexibility from SMT in the initial years as change in the way Organic Lens Manufacturing was managing its H&S programme, such as safety risk assessment, taking a proactive approach with audit and inspection programmes to the way ownership and responsibility for H&S matters been taken by line and senior management.

We were happy to assist the EH&S Manager in this process as we knew what was required considering shift patterns and production requirements at the same time the EH&S Manager was confident, we could deliver the service for the company. Since that time, we have maintained a strong connection with Organic Lens Manufacturing and its EH&S department to this day.

Our goals were to:

• Provide a new and updated safety statement.
• Conduct risk assessments for specific departments within the plant.
• Provide Safety Advisor services to support the health and safety department.
• Provide QQI Supervisory Management training course.
• Provide Abrasive Wheels training courses.
• Provide Lock Out Tag Out training for key maintenance and supervisory staff.
• Provide Manual Handling Instructor training courses for key staff.
• Provide Forklift training courses.

The Solution

After in-depth consultation with management and staff and multiple on-site visits, SMT’s consultants delivered the following services:

• Created new safety statement.
• Created risk assessments in line with OLM’s policy and procedure.
• Created health and safety policies and procedures to meeting plant safety objectives.
• Communicated key policies and procedures at management training sessions.
• Provided a range of training services such as QQI Supervisory Management, Forklift, Abrasive Wheels, Lock Out Tag Out, Manual Handling to OLM standards and requirements.
• Carried out individual workplace assessments including DSE Assessments and training.
• Provided Safety Advisor services and support information to EH&S department.

The Outcome

SMT worked closely with the EH&S manager to ensure the Team leaders, Supervisors and Managers were briefed and trained in the current practices and legislation along with their own internal procedures and safe systems of work. Organic Lens Manufacturing were always engaging and fully committed to implementing their safety management system, which in many ways made our work much easier to carry out.
