Course Description


The Abrasive Wheels Regulations 2016 require all Employers using Abrasive Wheels to appoint a competent person to use, mount and maintain these wheels. The Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005 and the 2007 General Application Regulations requires training to be provided to such employees so that they will understand the legal requirements of working with Abrasive Wheels will select wheels and use and mount wheels correctly.

Course Delivery Method: Virtual Classroom

Instruction on the theory of the use of Abrasive Wheels and a practical session on the selecting & mounting of abrasive wheels and use of equipment associated with abrasive wheels. Course Materials are provided for all learner. Course content includes the following:

  • Introduction & Welcome
  • Module 1 – Abrasive wheels hazards & precautions when using abrasive wheels
  • Module 2 – Health effects and safe working levels
  • Module 3 – Permissible levels of exposure
  • Module 4 – Classification of dangerous substances
  • Module 5 – Methods of marking, storing and handling
  • Module 6 – Methods of inspection
  • Module 7 – Key functions of abrasive wheels units
  • Module 8 – Assembly components
  • Module 9 – Dressing wheels
  • Module 10 – Practical Demonstration

Additional modules & information can be included on request. On successful completion of the programme the attendants will be issued with a SMT certificate.

Who should attend?

All employees purchasing, operating and maintaining abrasive wheels units in the workplace.

Prior knowledge

Previous experience working with abrasive wheels or hand-held equipment is desirable.

Pre-course preparation

When training is to be delivered on site the employer must ensure that suitable abrasive wheels are available on site for practical demonstration purposes and that they are in good working condition. Learners are required to:
