Safety Representative (Face to Face)

Course Description


SMT’s health and safety representatives training course will give you a clear understanding of the role, responsibilities and benefits of well-run safety committees. A well trained and properly motivated safety representative will make a positive contribution to an organisation’s safety culture.

Course Delivery Method: Face to Face

For essential services, or where authorised, On Site training can be conducted depending on which current level of the National Framework for Living with Covid-19 is in place and once the minimum infection controls below can be observed:

  • A minimum of 2 metres between each trainee
  • A well aired room with windows that can be open
  • Hand sanitiser or/and gloves made available to all trainees
  • All hard surfaces cleaned before and after the training course
  • No other personnel allowed in the room until the course has finished
  • No entry of personnel showing any symptoms of COVID-19
  • Pre-screening Covid-19 questionnaire completed and approved before course commencement
  • All Government, HSE, WHO & CIF guidelines can be adhered to

This course has been designed to equip learners with the necessary skills and knowledge to function effectively as a safety representative within their organisation. On successful completion of the course delegates will be able to identify health & safety legislation relevant to their workplace, understand the functions and entitlements of safety representatives and understand accident causation, investigation and prevention principles. The delegates will also be in a position to carry out and report on safety inspections, explain the main health and safety risks within the work environment.

Course materials are provided for all learners. The Safety for Safety Representative Course comprised of 5 modules:

  • Introduction & Welcome
  • Module 1 – Module 1 – Role & Function of the Safety Representatives
  • Module 2 – Legislation
  • Module 3 – Safety Management
  • Module 4 – Classification of dangerous substances
  • Module 5 – Hazard Identification and Risk Assessments
  • Module 6 – Accident Investigation & Reporting

Additional modules & information can be included on request. On successful completion of the programme the attendants will be issued with a SMT certificate.

Who should attend?

The course is intended for safety representatives, safety committee members and others involved in the consultation process on the workplace.

Prior knowledge

Participants are required to have knowledge on individual risks, activities and function within the workplace.

Learners are required to:
