RTITB Counterbalance Lift Truck (Face to Face)

Course Description


The RTITB Counterbalance Lift Truck (often referred to as a forklift) operator training course will give you the skills to operate the truck safely and efficiently, carry out a pre-use inspection, and recall and explain the causes of truck and load instability.

Course Delivery Method: Face to Face.

For essential services, or where authorised, On Site training can be conducted depending on which current level of the National Framework for Living with Covid-19 is in place and once the minimum infection controls below can be observed:

  • A minimum of 2 metres between each trainee.
  • A well aired room with windows that can be open.
  • Hand sanitiser or/and gloves made available to all trainees.
  • All hard surfaces cleaned before and after the training course.
  • No other personnel allowed in the room until the course has finished.
  • No entry of personnel showing any symptoms of COVID-19.
  • Pre-screening Covid-19 questionnaire completed and approved before course commencement.
  • All Government, HSE, WHO & CIF guidelines can be adhered to.

On completion of this course, participants will:

  • Demonstrate safe operating skill.
  • Avoid danger to people and property.
  • List the key features of relevant legislation.

The course content meets the requirements of the Code of Practice for Forklift Operator Training issued by the Health and Safety Authority. Content for Novice and Existing courses is as follows:

  • Introduction & Welcome.
  • Module 1 – Introduction to the Truck Various Controls & Instruments.
  • Module 2 – Steering, Preparing, moving, stopping & parking.
  • Module 3 – Fuel source & Pre-use inspections.
  • Module 4 – Truck and load stability assessment.
  • Module 5 – Handling various loads for stacking/Bulk stacking.
  • Module 6 – Vertical face and undercutting.
  • Module 7 – Turning in narrow aisles & racking.
  • Module 8 – Negotiating inclines.
  • Module 9 – Vehicle loading and unloading.

Content for Refresher courses is as follows:

  • Introduction & Welcome.
  • Module 1 – Theory update.
  • Module 2 – Introduction to the truck and principles of Stability.
  • Module 3 – Pre use inspection.
  • Module 4 – Assessment of operator ability and remedial tuition.
  • Module 5 – Basic operating skills test.

The Road Transport Industry Training Board (RTITB) certificate and operator card will be awarded to all those who attend the course and successfully complete the written and practical assessments. The course content meets the requirements of the Code of Practice for Forklift Operator Training issued by the Health and Safety Authority.

Who should attend?

These courses is suitable for new, existing or current forklift drivers looking to refresher their training. The Novice course is for new forklift drivers with no experience, the Existing course is for forklift drivers with experience but do not hold a valid certification, the refresher course is for forklift drivers that hold a valid certification and required re-certification.

Prior knowledge

Learners who wish to do the Novice course required no prior knowlegde or experience.

Learners who wish to do the Existing course must provide evidence of experience on a forklift truck.

Learners who wish to do the refresher course must hold a valid certification.

Pre-course preparation

Candidates are required to bring the following on the training day:

  • Passport Photo.
  • Photo ID.
  • All operators must provide appropriate Personnel Protective Equipment.
  • Complete our Pre-Course Questionnaire 3 days prior to course.
  • Complete our COVID-19 Training Commencement form 3 days prior to course (On Site courses only).
