Chemical Hazard Awareness (Face to Face)
Course Description
Chemicals are widely used in our homes, manufacturing and agricultural facilities, as well as many other areas of society. Hazardous chemicals are commonly found in our workplaces. In spite of government regulations and company procedures, the risk always exists for a serious incident involving hazardous chemicals. This chemical safety training course has been designed to introduce the safe use of chemicals to the workplace. It is intended for those who need to widen their general knowledge of chemical safety.
Course Delivery Method: Face to Face.
For essential services, or where authorised, On Site training can be conducted depending on which current level of the National Framework for Living with Covid-19 is in place and once the minimum infection controls below can be observed:
- A minimum of 2 metres between each trainee.
- A well aired room with windows that can be open.
- Hand sanitiser or/and gloves made available to all trainees.
- All hard surfaces cleaned before and after the training course
- No other personnel allowed in the room until the course has finished.
- No entry of personnel showing any symptoms of COVID-19.
- Pre-screening Covid-19 questionnaire completed and approved before course commencement.
- All Government, HSE, WHO & CIF guidelines can be adhered to.
On completion of the course the learners will:
- Have a general understanding of the legislation pertaining to hazardous substances, including reach regulations.
- To develop an understanding of the concepts of chemicals, their hazardous properties and characteristics.
- To interpret warning symbols.
- To interpret material safety data sheets.
- To review the efficiency of the company’s spill response procedure.
- To develop practical skills in responding to chemical spillages.
Instruction on the theory of the use of Abrasive Wheels and a practical session on the selecting & mounting of abrasive wheels and use of equipment associated with abrasive wheels. Course Materials are provided for all learner. Course content includes the following:
- Introduction & Welcome.
- Module 1 – Legislation.
- Module 2 – Health & Exposure
- Module 3 – Classification & Safety Data Sheets.
- Module 4 – Personal Protective Equipment.
- Module 5 – Spill Kits & Response.
- Module 6 – Investigation & Reporting Spills.
- Module 7 – Handling of Awkward Loads.
- Module 8 – Written & Practical Exam.
Additional modules & information can be included on request. On successful completion of the programme the attendants will be issued with a SMT certificate.
Who should attend?
Environmental and health and safety personnel, personnel involved in emergency response, personnel involved in regulatory affairs, operators involved in hazardous chemicals, movement, storage, etc, chemical stores personnel or laboratory and research and development personnel.

None.
Pre-course preparation
Learners are required to in advance of training:
- Complete our Pre-Course Questionnaire 3 days prior to course.
- Complete our COVID-19 Training Commencement form 3 days prior to course (On Site courses only).
- List of Chemicals used and Material Safety Data Sheet.
- Chemical Procedure & Risk Assessments.
